Veteran hiring has become mainstream and part of many companies’ talent acquisition plans.  With more and easier ways to hire veterans, employers are turning their attention on how they make the most of their military talent.  The same military skills translation challenges that exist in hiring are also present in on-boarding.  While many best-practices exist, there are few tools that can solve these unique veteran on-boarding challenges.

The personal development survey combined with the Transition Map and Action Plan is bringing great potential for veteran friendly employers.  It breaks down a veteran’s strengths into a highly actionable way.  It enables on-boarding of each veteran uniquely and gives their peers and managers a unique understanding of the veteran’s strengths through the lens of their military experience.  This tool also enables peer mentoring of veterans within the company that leads to higher retention and productivity.

After I took the communication survey, I was very doubtful that the results would be all that helpful. I just felt that it was too short and too general. Man, was I wrong. When my mentor led me through what the data meant, I had quite a few AHA moments. He helped me to see what drives me, what annoys me, and how to find useful outlets for my strengths and places to avoid for my weakness. Since then, my wife also took it and we were able to discover the triggers that cause conflict in our marriage. That understanding really helped with our conflict communication and resolution. I have also used the survey to help young men who are trying to choose colleges, and applied it to help parents understand their children. The survey and the help of a peer mentor, coupled with the visualization of the transition map is a great way to help ANYBODY who is currently in transition. My sincere hope is that this program expands and becomes an integral part of the military transition process.
